David Hiner, 30, has been arrested and charged with two counts of murder in connection with the "brutal and evil" killings of Shannon Lassere, 58, and Marianne Weis, 52, in Indianapolis. Both victims were found stabbed to death on the city's east side, with Lassere discovered in a parking lot on Jan. 27 and Weis found behind a building about 150 yards away on Feb. 1.
The Indianapolis Interim Police Chief, Christopher Bailey, described the murders as "brutal and evil" during a press briefing, expressing condolences to the victims' families and hoping the arrest brings a sense of peace and safety to the community.
Hiner was apprehended based on surveillance footage and forensic evidence. Detectives observed Hiner leaving his apartment building wearing clothing similar to what was seen in surveillance footage of Weis walking with a man the night she was killed. Additionally, a preliminary DNA analysis of blood from Hiner's shoes matched that of both victims.
Hiner, who was on probation from La Porte County, Indiana, was taken into custody on Tuesday, with a search warrant executed at his apartment revealing potential evidence, including blood-stained shoes and jeans soaking in bleach.
Hiner was released from prison in September 2023 and has a criminal history including a previous conviction for felony aggravated battery in 2012 where he pleaded guilty to shooting a pizza delivery driver.
While Hiner denied involvement in the murders during police interviews, evidence gathered points to his connection to the crimes. The motive for the killings remains unknown at this time.
The case underscores the importance of community involvement in aiding law enforcement investigations, as noted by Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears, who thanked the community for their assistance in providing information crucial to the case.
