DailyKenn.com — Kathryn Garton Holmes, 67, was fatally shot in Greensboro, NC.
Troy Marquise Gillard, 31, was charged with first-degree murder.
On
May 24, Holmes was on her way to meet Gillard for a planned transaction
arranged through an online marketplace. While driving she was shot in the neck and paralyzed. Unable
to lift her foot from the accelerator, Holmes' vehicle crashed into a
creek bed. She passed away two days later.
Hours after the shooting, police received a tip about someone entering a home in the 500 block of Denny Road. A search revealed the house was unoccupied, but it was later discovered that Gillard had a family connection to the property.
"For the first-degree murder charge, there are two punishments: either life in prison without parole or the death penalty," said Guilford County District Court Judge Joel Oakley.
Holmes had a distinguished career as a supervisor at the police and fire communications center with 911 dispatch for the City of Coral Gables in Florida, where she met her husband, a police lieutenant for the Coral Gables Police Department.
Her daughter mentioned that Holmes was excited about being the mother of the bride, as her daughter is getting married in November.
