MILWAUKEE (DailyKenn.com) — A domestic dispute ended in tragedy when a young mother was found dead from a single gunshot in a northwest side motel, authorities said.

Police responded to the Port Motel near West Appleton Avenue and North 96th Street shortly before 2:40 p.m. on Jan. 14 after an employee discovered the body. The victim, identified by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office as Alicia Renee Machnik, suffered a fatal wound to her forehead, with an exit injury at the back of her head. Investigators ruled the death a homicide.

According to court records, Machnik and her husband, Lance Devon White, had checked into the motel two days earlier, on Jan. 12, around 1 p.m., as captured by surveillance cameras. The couple, married for about a year, had been staying in various motels and struggling with personal issues, family members told detectives.

On the morning of the shooting, a motel worker spoke briefly with Machnik around 11:30 a.m. while cleaning nearby rooms. She indicated plans to extend their stay but did not follow up with payment. Video footage showed White exiting their room alone at 11:36 a.m., with no further activity until the employee's return over three hours later. Upon entering with a key after getting no response, the worker found Machnik lifeless on the bed, prompting an immediate call to authorities.

Officers at the scene recovered a spent 9 mm cartridge and a bullet with traces of blood, along with White's personal documents, including his ID, birth certificate, and debit card. White, arrested later that evening at a local hospital where relatives had taken him, allegedly confessed to the act. He told investigators Machnik had urged him to fire at a tattoo of his name on her face, citing dread over her children's father, due for release from prison in less than a year, who she feared would harm them. White said he complied, then panicked, discarded the weapon in a nearby sewer, and attempted to book another room at a different motel before being turned away for lacking identification.

Machnik's mother described her daughter as having faced mounting difficulties since the marriage, according to police reports. An associate who had been in occasional contact with Machnik provided Uber records showing rides to the motel and other locations that day, aiding the timeline. Relatives, devastated by the loss, launched an online fundraiser to support Machnik's two young children, emphasizing her role as a caring parent caught in a cycle of hardship.

Prosecutors filed charges of first-degree intentional homicide against White on Jan. 18. He made an initial court appearance two days later, held without bond as the case proceeds.

Community members expressed sorrow over the incident, with one local resident near the scene urging an end to such senseless acts. "We need to love one another and stop this violence," she said, reflecting broader calls for peace amid Milwaukee's early-year homicides.

The investigation continues, with police seeking any additional tips from the public.
