DailyKenn.com — Actress Gina Carano is suing Disney after being dropped from “The Mandalorian” television series in 2021 — a lawsuit funded by Elon Musk, who has taken swipes at the conglomerate since it withdrew advertising dollars last year from the social media platform he owns.

Musk, who purchased Twitter in October 2022 with the intention of transforming it into a town square of unpoliced free speech, has promised to fund lawsuits for people “unfairly treated” by their employers over their posts or activity on the platform, which he has rebranded as X.

Carano filed a lawsuit financed by X against Disney and its subsidiary, Lucasfilm, in which she asked for damages and for her role to be reinstated on the Emmy-winning TV show.

Carano played Cara Dune in “The Mandalorian,” an addition to the Star Wars franchise that premiered in November 2019.

Controversy over her social media activity culminated in her being dropped from the show in February 2021 after she posted an Instagram story that was interpreted by some as a comparison between having right-wing views and being a Jew during the Holocaust.

Carano denied making the comparison and alleges that she was fired in retaliation for the “lawful exercise of her right to speak and express her views.”

Carano has faced criticism for social media activity including liking posts disparaging the Black Lives Matter movement, mocking coronavirus mask-wearing as a Democratic Party conspiracy, and echoing former president Donald Trump’s claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election.

Carano claims she was “being hunted down” online because her views were not “in line with the acceptable narrative of the time.”

Musk is likely funding the lawsuit to curry favor with conservatives and to fight with Disney publicly since they pulled advertising from X.

Musk appears to be cultivating a public image that appeals to the far right, positioning himself as a champion of free speech and attracting support from extreme right-wing figures.

Companies like Disney suspended advertising on X after the platform was accused of placing corporate ads next to antisemitic and pro-Nazi posts.

Takeaways:

• This is an iteration of what conservatives call 'cancel culture.'

Years ago the woke far left coined the term "McCarthyism" to smear conservatives who allegedly "black listed" actors who espoused communist ideas. The term was named for Sen. Joe McCarthy whose war on Hollywood communists is incorrectly conflated with the House Un-American Activities Committee.

Cancel culture and McCarthyism are effective synonymous, only by who is censoring whom.

• The lawsuit says Carano willingly took part in Zoom meetings with leaders of LGBTQ+ groups at the company’s behest with “very positive” results, but that Lucasfilm demanded a public apology in which she admitted “to mocking or insulting an entire group of people, which Carano had never done” and subjected her to other harassment over the issue.
