Steven Cotner, 23, was fatally shot in Calumnet City, IL.

Calumet City is a suburb of Chicago with a population that is 71.3 percent black and 9.1 percent non-Hispanic white [source].

It is part of a metropolitan area that includes Gary, IN.

Calumet City police were searching for the gunmen responsible for the fatal shooting of a man who was defending his sister during a robbery.

The victim and his sister Allison
Cotner—who was assaulted in the incident—were both pizza delivery drivers.

“He pointed the gun at me and said, ‘Give me the money!’” recalled Allison. “I told him, ‘I don’t have any money.’”

Steven and Allison were working for Windy City Pizza Works in Calumet City on Thursday night when they were called to make a delivery around 8 p.m. What they didn’t know was that the call was a setup for an armed robbery.

“I begged him, ‘Please don’t shoot me! I just told you I don’t have any money!’” Allison said.

Within moments, two teens—dressed entirely in black, with only their eyes visible—confronted Allison with guns drawn. One of them struck her in the left eye with the grip of his gun, leaving her with bruises and needing stitches.

Steven quickly intervened to defend her.

“I heard two gunshots, and they killed my brother for no reason,” Allison said. “He was just an innocent soul. They didn’t have to do that to him.”

The attackers fled without taking any money. According to Allison, her brother always accompanied her on deliveries to protect her. Despite being younger, Steven was always her protector.

The siblings shared their earnings and both still lived at home. Steven, 23, was saving up to get a place of his own.

“I just want him back,” Allison said tearfully.

The Cotner family, from Hammond, Indiana, is tight-knit, with Steven being the fifth of six children.

“He would do anything to protect us,” said Candace Cotner, their sister. “He lost his life over nothing. They didn’t get any money, nothing. They just took his life for no reason.”

The incident underscores the disparate natures of cultures in America. The one culture stresses work to achieve success while the other is immersed in violent crime, stealing from those who are productive.
What's more, the calloused nature of the homicide suggests inherent psychopathy, narcissism, and entitlement that seem to permeate America's urban jungles.  [source]

Matthew Joseph Johnson, 41, was fatally shot in Ft. Wayne, IN.

29-year-old Dominique Mejae Washington faces two counts of murder and two counts of felony murder.

Also dead is Christina Dixon.

Authorities have identified the two individuals whose bodies were discovered in the St. Marys River. Dixon and Johnson had helped investigators lead a drug bust just a week before their deaths.

The court documents reveal that Dixon and Johnson were confidential informants for the Richmond Police Department. Their cooperation resulted in a search warrant at a residence linked to Washington, where a significant quantity of narcotics was seized.

Washington, also known by the aliases "Rooster" and "Nico," is accused of abducting Dixon, 40, and Johnson, 41, on Thursday. Investigators suspect Washington lured the victims into a vehicle and forced them to turn off their phones.

Court records suggest that Washington switched vehicles at some point and killed both victims before dumping their bodies in the St. Marys River in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The next day, volunteers cleaning the river near downtown Fort Wayne discovered the remains. The Allen County Coroner has ruled both deaths as homicides, determining that Dixon died from strangulation and suffocation, while Johnson succumbed to a gunshot and stab wound.

Carrie Kwok, 66, was fatally shot in St. Paul, MN.

The suspect, 29-year-old Seantrell Murdock, was killed hours later during a confrontation with police.

Both Police Chief Henry and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter expressed sorrow over the “cold-blooded” killing of a woman behind the Lowertown Lofts Artist Cooperative.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows the victim, who was on her knees painting a mural in the street, being shot by the gunman.

“She was as vulnerable as a person could be when someone with intent to harm approached her,” Henry said.

Before officers had made contact with anyone in the house, the suspect exited the residence armed with a handgun. Officers approached, and two of them fired, striking the suspect, according to Henry.

The man was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he later died. No officers were injured in the incident.

In 2023, a Scott County judge ordered him to undergo civil commitment, but the order was stayed, meaning the commitment would not be enforced if he voluntarily engaged in treatment.

Murdock, a convicted felon, had previously been convicted of first-degree burglary in 2014. Under Minnesota law, individuals convicted of violent crimes or confined to a treatment facility due to mental illness are prohibited from possessing firearms.

Prohibition obviously does not work.

Court records revealed that Murdock, who had been diagnosed with bipolar and schizoaffective disorders, should not have had access to a firearm.  [source]
