COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A Violent Encounter Ends in Murder of Uber Driver

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (
DailyKenn.com) — A 27-year-old woman has been charged with first-degree murder following the stabbing death of 38-year-old Uber driver Jeremy Campbell in a shocking incident that unfolded early Monday in El Paso County. Authorities say the altercation began when Khayla Dawson, a former track and field athlete, entered Campbell’s vehicle, leading to a violent confrontation that left the paralyzed driver dead.

The incident reportedly started late Sunday night when Campbell, who was known to work extended hours, picked up Dawson as a passenger. According to investigators, Dawson claimed she felt "cooped up" during the ride and alleged that Campbell attempted to touch her, prompting her to pull out a knife. She told authorities that a struggle ensued, during which Campbell also produced a knife, and she stabbed him multiple times in the head, face, and neck. Deputies later found Campbell’s body in a field, surrounded by evidence of a car crash through a fence, suggesting a chaotic escape attempt.

Campbell’s family reported him missing after he failed to respond to calls, noting his unusual absence. Deputies traced his vehicle to the Polaris Junction apartment complex, where they arrested Dawson. She was taken to a hospital for a broken knee sustained during the incident and initially refused to cooperate, citing a need for legal counsel. Investigators noted a gap in Dawson’s phone tracking, indicating she may have disabled location services before the attack.

Dawson faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, second-degree motor vehicle theft, and tampering with physical evidence. She is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court next week. An autopsy confirmed Campbell suffered defensive wounds on his left hand, supporting the narrative of a struggle.

Local reactions have been marked by grief and concern. Campbell’s family has declined to comment, while community members expressed shock over the loss of a dedicated driver. Some residents have called for increased safety measures for ride-share drivers, highlighting the vulnerability of those in the profession. The case continues to draw attention as authorities piece together the full sequence of events.
