LAS VEGAS — Judge Sentences Man to Probation in Fatal Abuse of 1-Year-Old Boy

A Las Vegas judge reluctantly imposed a probation sentence on a man who admitted to causing the death of his girlfriend's toddler, citing evidentiary concerns raised by prosecutors that could have led to an acquittal at trial.

Christian Moniz Rabino, 29, received up to five years of probation Tuesday after entering a guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter in the June 2024 death of 17-month-old Kai Tesoro. Court records show Rabino was alone with the child when he inflicted injuries that led to the boy's death, including hitting him on the head, shaking him, or both. Prosecutors initially pursued first-degree murder and child abuse charges against Rabino following a grand jury indictment in 2024.

The sequence of events began in late May 2024, when authorities allege Rabino grew frustrated with Kai's delayed ability to walk independently. Medical examiners later determined the child suffered fractures to both legs, consistent with intentional harm during that period. On June 1, emergency responders arrived at a Las Vegas home after reports of an unresponsive toddler. Paramedics transported Kai to Summerlin Hospital, where doctors identified severe brain bleeding, extensive bruising on his head and body, and the leg fractures. Hospital staff described the case as one of the most extreme instances of child abuse they had encountered.

Despite life-saving efforts, Kai succumbed to a massive stroke and died on June 6. An autopsy confirmed the injuries resulted from violent shaking and blunt force trauma, ruling out any accidental cause. Police arrested Rabino on June 25 after interviews and forensic analysis pointed to him as the sole caregiver during the critical time. Investigators noted the child's mother had knowledge of prior mistreatment but faced no charges in the matter.

In court Tuesday, District Judge Jacqueline Bluth expressed strong reservations about the plea agreement, stating she disagreed with its leniency but felt bound by the terms negotiated between defense attorneys and the district attorney's office. Prosecutors explained that challenges with key evidence, including potential issues in presenting medical testimony to a jury, prompted the reduced charge to avoid a possible not-guilty verdict.

Family members delivered emotional statements during the hearing. Kai's grandfather, Steven Tesoro, urged the court to deliver justice for the voiceless child, emphasizing that Kai's organs were donated to save other lives. Other relatives echoed calls for accountability, highlighting the profound loss to their family.

The sentence requires Rabino to complete anger management courses, adhere to a curfew, and avoid contact with minors except his own child. He remains under house arrest pending compliance checks.

Community response has been marked by widespread dismay. Residents and online commentators have voiced frustration over the outcome, questioning the justice system's handling of child fatality cases and calling for reforms to protect vulnerable youth. Advocacy groups in Las Vegas have renewed pushes for stronger evidentiary standards in abuse prosecutions.

The case underscores ongoing concerns about child welfare in the region, where authorities report dozens of similar investigations annually.
