PHILADELPHIA (DailyKenn.com) — A domestic dispute escalated into a deadly exchange of gunfire on New Year's Day, claiming the lives of two men and leaving another wounded in a quiet Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood.

Authorities reported that the incident began around 11 a.m. on the 7100 block of Oakland Street in the Castor section of the city. Police said a 44-year-old woman, Cara Williams-Reeves, arrived at the home with her 21-year-old son, Tyriq Williams, intending to retrieve belongings from her ex-boyfriend's residence. Tensions quickly rose into a physical confrontation involving the ex-boyfriend and his associates.

According to investigators, Luis Colon, 52, the woman's stepfather who lived at the address, stepped outside to intervene and de-escalate the situation. As he attempted to calm the parties, gunfire erupted from multiple directions. Colon was struck several times in the chest amid the chaos. Responding officers found him gravely injured at the scene and rushed him to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead shortly before noon.

A second victim, 21-year-old Quadir Tull, believed to be associated with the ex-boyfriend's group, was also hit by bullets. He managed to flee the area but collapsed nearby and was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that afternoon. A third man, aged 21 and unidentified by officials, suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to his leg and was treated at a local facility before being released.

Eyewitnesses described a frantic scene. One neighbor, Paul Cuikla, told officers he heard a series of loud pops resembling fireworks, initially mistaking them for holiday celebrations. "It was over in seconds, but the screams lingered," Cuikla recounted to police. Another resident, who requested anonymity, said she saw individuals scrambling for cover behind vehicles parked along the street, with shell casings scattered across the pavement afterward.

Philadelphia Police Department's homicide unit swiftly investigated, recovering two firearms from the site and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby homes. By the following day, detectives had arrested Williams-Reeves and her son, Tyriq Williams. Both face multiple counts of murder, aggravated assault, and weapons offenses. Officials stated that the pair allegedly initiated the shooting, though defense attorneys have not yet commented publicly. The suspects were arraigned without bail and are scheduled for preliminary hearings later this month.

Community members expressed shock at the violence in what they described as a typically peaceful block. Local leaders, including City Council members, called for renewed focus on conflict resolution programs amid rising gun incidents in the area. Relatives of Colon gathered at the home in mourning, remembering him as a devoted family man who often mediated disputes. "He was always the peacemaker," a family friend said. Police urged anyone with additional information to contact their tip line as the probe continues.
