MIDWAY, Texas — Authorities detailed a violent sequence of events that left two men dead at a rural worksite, a woman critically injured at a convenience store, and the alleged perpetrator deceased in law enforcement custody, according to the Madison County Sheriff's Office.
The incident began early on the morning of Feb. 13 when Jeffery Rayshun Foster, 45, of Midway, allegedly confronted two coworkers at an oil pad site off FM 2346. Officials said Foster, who shared employment ties with the victims, fired shots that fatally wounded Michael James Nash, 62, of Bedias, and Conrad Ruelas. After the attack, Foster reportedly took a company vehicle and headed to Fraley's Food Store in Midway.
At approximately 7:50 a.m., deputies responded to reports of an aggravated robbery at the store, where they found Daniesha Lashelle Wiley suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Wiley, who authorities said had a personal relationship with Foster, was rushed to St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital in Bryan. She later identified Foster as her assailant while receiving treatment, and surveillance footage corroborated her account, showing the shooting inside the store. Wiley's condition improved to stable by mid-week, officials noted.
Foster fled the scene in the stolen truck, prompting a high-speed chase after state troopers spotted him on FM 1119 around 8:19 a.m. The pursuit involved multiple agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety and deputies from Madison and Leon counties. Troopers executed a precision immobilization technique to stop the vehicle, leading to Foster's arrest without further incident.
Transported to the Madison County Jail, Foster became unresponsive during the intake process at about 9:10 a.m. Jail personnel and emergency responders attempted resuscitation, but a justice of the peace pronounced him dead at the scene. The Texas Rangers launched an independent probe into the circumstances of his in-custody death, as required by protocol.
Meanwhile, back at the oil pad site, a separate call came in around 10:03 a.m. reporting a body, where deputies discovered Nash's remains. Investigators linked the scene to Foster through evidence, including the stolen truck's origin. At 1:11 p.m., search teams located Ruelas nearby, also deceased from gunshot injuries.
Sheriff's investigators pieced together that Foster targeted his coworkers first, then drove to the store in an act described as attempted murder. No motive was publicly disclosed, though authorities confirmed the professional connections among the men. No formal charges were filed due to Foster's death, but the multi-agency investigation continues across the four related sites.
Residents in the close-knit rural area expressed profound shock over the violence, with some who knew the involved parties describing it as a jarring disruption to their quiet community. One former store employee recalled frequent interactions with Foster, underscoring the personal toll on locals.
The victims' identities were released Feb. 17 as autopsies proceeded. Nash, remembered by family as a steadfast husband and friend, was set for a funeral service Feb. 21 at a local church.
