INDIANAPOLIS — Authorities in Indianapolis are probing the killing of a 56-year-old local resident after his remains were located inside a burned-out car, with investigators classifying the case as a homicide stemming from a fatal gunshot.

Michael Lockridge, a longtime Indianapolis resident originally from Rushville, was last observed alive around 7 p.m. on Feb. 7, according to relatives. Firefighters responded to reports of a vehicle blaze in an alley near West 29th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street at approximately 4:41 a.m. the next day. They extinguished the flames engulfing a black Honda Civic but did not initially detect any occupants.

Hours later, around 1:12 p.m. on Feb. 8, emergency crews returned to the site following additional concerns about the vehicle, which had remained in place. Upon closer examination, they found Lockridge's body inside, bearing evident signs of trauma. Arson specialists were summoned shortly after, at 2:04 p.m., to assess the scene. The Marion County Coroner's Office later determined that Lockridge died from a gunshot wound to the head, ruling the manner of death as homicide.

Police officials reported no immediate leads on what prompted the attack or the subsequent attempt to incinerate the car. "It is very unclear what led to this, and that’s why we need the community’s help," said IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson, emphasizing the role of public tips in resolving similar cases. Detectives have urged anyone with information to contact homicide investigator Dustin Keedy directly or submit anonymous details through Crime Stoppers.

A nearby resident, Shay West, recalled noticing the car lingering undisturbed for an extended period before authorities intervened a second time. "It was very alarming," West said. "We really weren't paying attention to it, but it came to alarm after it's just been sitting there for hours. Nobody didn't say nothing."

Relatives and acquaintances portrayed Lockridge as a gentle and unassuming individual, expressing profound disbelief over the violent circumstances of his death. As the youngest of eight siblings, he had resided on the city's east side with his sister in recent years. Friends highlighted his kind nature, insisting he avoided conflicts and deserved no such fate.

Community leaders voiced frustration over persistent troubles in the neighborhood, which they linked to broader social challenges. The Rev. Charles Harrison, senior pastor at Barnes United Methodist Church just blocks from the site, pointed to ongoing drug activity, homelessness, and loitering around vacant properties as contributing factors. "This seems to happen every year," Harrison said. "When you got addicts and homeless and all those people kind of intermingling, something bad is going to happen unless we address this problem." He called for city officials and residents to tackle these root issues to prevent further tragedies.

As of Feb. 20, no suspects have been named, and no charges have been filed in the ongoing inquiry. Lockridge's death marks one of the early homicides in Indianapolis this year, heightening concerns among locals about safety in vulnerable areas.
