DECATUR, Ga. — A 40-year-old woman out for her usual morning walk with her dog was shot and stabbed to death Monday in a DeKalb County neighborhood near Decatur, the second fatal shooting authorities have tied to the same suspect in a span of hours.
Lauren Bullis was found with multiple gunshot and stab wounds shortly before 7 a.m. on Battle Forrest Drive in the Panthersville area. Officers arrived to reports of a person shot and pronounced her dead at the scene. She had been walking her dog, something neighbors said she did regularly, when the attack happened. An unidentified woman was shot multiple times outside a Checkers restaurant.
A neighbor who spoke with investigators said she heard six or seven gunshots, then spotted Bullis lying at the end of a driveway with a man standing over her. The man, described as wearing a hoodie, stopped briefly to tie his shoe before running off. The neighbor quickly called for help and guided family members to contact 911.
DeKalb County police connected Bullis's killing to two earlier shootings that same morning through surveillance video, license-plate readers and witness descriptions. The first attack took place around 12:52 a.m. outside a Checkers restaurant on Wesley Chapel Road in unincorporated DeKalb County. A woman there was shot multiple times; she was rushed to a hospital but later died. Her name has not yet been released as authorities notify her family.
Roughly 40 minutes after that, around 1:30 a.m., a 49-year-old man believed to be homeless was shot several times outside a Kroger in the Cherokee Plaza shopping center in Brookhaven. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Police have said there was no apparent connection between the victims or to the suspect in any of the cases.
Olaolukitan Adon Abel, 26, of Atlanta, was arrested later Monday in Troup County with assistance from other law enforcement agencies. He faces charges including aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony related to the Brookhaven shooting. Authorities are continuing to build cases against him in the two fatal incidents. No motive has been disclosed, and investigators have found no evidence of any prior relationship between Abel and the victims.
