ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Authorities have built a strong case against five people they say orchestrated a deadly ambush last week, leaving a 23-year-old man dead after what detectives describe as a carefully staged encounter near a popular local restaurant.
Eden Rock died from gunshot wounds after an attack on the night of May 13, 2026. Police responded to reports of shots fired shortly before 11 p.m. behind the Frontier Restaurant, close to the University of New Mexico campus. Officers found Rock suffering from multiple wounds. He was rushed to a hospital but did not survive.
Detectives pieced together events using surveillance video, ShotSpotter alerts, and witness accounts. They believe Rock went to the restaurant that evening to meet a woman. As the pair walked through the alley, four men who had arrived earlier in a gray Jeep Cherokee waited in hiding behind a dumpster. When Rock passed by, the group rushed him, knocked him to the ground, and one opened fire—striking him twice. The attackers then fled in the vehicle.
Investigators say the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Rock and one of the suspects. They allege the woman helped set up the meeting to draw Rock into the trap. Albuquerque police arrested four men soon after the incident: Tenard Weekly, 20; Jaylen Hopewell, 20; Evan Rogers, 20; and Junior Lewis, 19. All face charges including an open count of murder, conspiracy, and tampering with evidence. Several are University of New Mexico students.
On May 19, officers took 20-year-old Zakiya Umstead into custody in Houston. She now faces the same charges. Police say video captured her walking away as the attack began.
This case highlights how quickly a seemingly casual meeting can turn dangerous when tensions escalate. Authorities continue to review evidence, including communication records that point to planning. Rock’s family has remembered him as someone full of care and warmth, according to a fundraising page set up in his honor.
The suspects remain in custody as the case moves through the courts. Police ask anyone with additional information to contact Albuquerque detectives.
