A routine Labor Day morning in Gulfport, Mississippi, turned deadly when two people were killed inside an AT&T store, leaving authorities to investigate what led a 71-year-old man to open fire.

The victims were identified as 31-year-old Shane Basquill of Kiln and 78-year-old Mary Anne Oberlies of Gulfport. Basquill worked at the store, while Oberlies was there as a customer, according to Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer. Both died at the scene.

The shooting happened at about 11:14 a.m. Sept. 7 at the store inside Crossroads Mall. Police said three other people were inside at the time.

Gulfport police identified the suspect as Samuel Jerome Andrews, 71, of Harrison County.

Investigators say Andrews arrived outside the store, approached the entrance carrying a firearm and fired before going inside. Police said he then continued shooting inside the business, striking Basquill and Oberlies.

The shooting ended with Andrews leaving the area in a vehicle. Responding officers spotted the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Andrews was taken into custody without incident, and police recovered a firearm, authorities said.

Two murder charges

Andrews was taken to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center. He faces two counts of first-degree murder and one count of shooting into a crowd.

A judge denied bond on the murder charges and set bond at $500,000 on the shooting-into-a-crowd charge, according to reports.

Authorities have not announced a motive or said that the victims and Andrews knew each other. The investigation remains active.

Oberlies' funeral arrangements were announced by Riemann Family Funeral Homes. Her visitation and Mass are scheduled for Sept. 14 in Gulfport.
