Christopher Cross James, 25, was killed in a shooting at his home in Berwick, Pennsylvania, during the late-night hours of Oct. 12, 2026. The investigation led to the arrest of a 22-year-old man who now faces criminal homicide charges.
Berwick police received a report of a shooting shortly after 11:15 p.m. Monday. Officers arriving at the residence found James suffering from a gunshot wound.
Police and emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures before James was transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. He was pronounced dead shortly after midnight, at 12:47 a.m. Tuesday, according to Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn.
The death prompted a homicide investigation involving the Berwick Borough Police Department, Pennsylvania State Police and the Columbia County District Attorney's Office.
The investigation eventually focused on Nicholas Peter Romeo, 22, of Berwick.
According to information released by police, investigators developed evidence indicating that Romeo allegedly entered James' residence through a rear door during the evening. Authorities allege he proceeded upstairs to a bedroom, where James was in bed, and shot him.
The allegations describe an attack inside the victim's home, although investigators have not publicly established a motive for the killing.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, investigators executed search warrants at a Berwick residence with assistance from the Columbia-Montour SWAT team and other law enforcement personnel. Romeo was taken into custody.
He was subsequently charged with criminal homicide, burglary and tampering with evidence. Following his arraignment before District Judge Craig W. Long, he was ordered held without bail at Columbia County Prison.
