Sudduth was renovating an abandoned home when he was shot.

"Jackson’s grandmother said he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in the past," according to wjtv.com. The defense for violent criminals often includes claims of mental illnesses [source].

Jackson may have been prompted to act out during his hearing to feign mental illness. According to
wlbt.com:

His behavior was unusual during the hearing with random outbursts, unusual movements, and speaking out of context.

Jackson spoke out of turn during the hearing, saying Charles Sudduth, the 73-year-old victim, “took everything that he owns.”

The suspect was also very aggressive toward another family member who appeared in court encouraging the judge to send Jackon to Hinds Behavioral Health or the State Hospital.

Based on all the evidence and Jackson’s appearance during the hearing, the judge said Jackson, “should never be on the street with his condition,” and that he would try to get him medical help.
Jackson also confessed to shooting a man at an ATM.
