The motive for the shooting was not disclosed. Reports, for example, did not say if Carter was targeted due to his homosexuality.
A network of crime cameras in New Orleans helped police bag the suspect. He was driving a stolen Kia which ditched into the bayou, police say.

NOPD officers have arrested a 16-year-old boy believed to be connected to the shooting death of Washington business owner Jacob Carter. Carter, the owner of a bagel shop in Tacoma, was identified by the Orleans Parish coroner on Monday after a fatal shooting on Jan. 5.
The incident occurred in the Marigny neighborhood in the early hours of a Friday, near Bourbon and Kerlerec Streets, where Carter was found dead around 1:30 a.m.
The NOPD stated that the suspect is currently in custody in Jefferson Parish on unrelated charges. He will be transferred to Orleans Parish and booked on a second-degree murder charge.
A stolen Kia, implicated in the homicide, was discovered in Bayou St. John on Tuesday. NOPD reported that the car was used in the crime and then abandoned in the bayou. Project NOLA collaborated with NOPD, utilizing crime cameras across the city to aid in identifying the vehicle of interest and the alleged suspect.
Jacob Carter had been in New Orleans on vacation with his husband and co-founder of Howdy Bagel, Daniel Blagovich, according to an Instagram post from Sunday.
As of Tuesday afternoon, a fundraiser for Howdy Bagel and Blagovich has raised nearly $208,000.
