A Mercer County man, Cory Lee Callen, aged 33, was arraigned on a first-degree murder charge after allegedly ambushing and shooting a woman, Leona Edwards, near Princeton. The incident occurred Thursday evening, leading to Callen's arraignment by video before Magistrate Susan Honaker on a first-degree murder charge. Currently, he is held without bond at the Central Regional Jail in Braxton County.
West Virginia State Police troopers from the Princeton detachment responded to Gardner Loop Road around 8:08 p.m. on Thursday following reports of a female individual shot, as per the criminal complaint filed by Senior Trooper N.C. Patton. The victim, identified as Leona Edwards, had been shot multiple times while exiting her vehicle and succumbed to her wounds shortly afterward.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Edwards had recently filed a domestic violence petition against Cory Callen. Patton's report stated that Callen had made numerous threats to kill the victim. The trooper believes the accused ambushed and shot the victim as she exited her vehicle.
Witnesses reported seeing a male individual in a grey sweatshirt leaving the scene and departing in a white SUV. Callen then fled the scene. The investigation traced the SUV from Mercer County to Nicholas County. Callen, wearing a grey sweatshirt and driving a white SUV, was apprehended.
Magistrate Honaker informed Callen during the arraignment that he would be held without bond, as per West Virginia law, which requires bond in first-degree murder cases to be set by a circuit court judge.
