31-year-old Shaquille Phillips was fatally stabbed in Bloomington, IN.
Arrested was Craig Pearson, 42.
Pearson reportedly fancied himself as an enforcer in a homeless camp. Phillips was accused of stealing from residents' tents and selling the stolen items.

One man, whose tent was set up “mere feet” from the victim’s body, said he had overheard Pearson “bragging about ‘chopping’ somebody with a machete” the night before. The man said he didn’t pay attention to the claims, but did confirm that Pearson is known to carry a machete.

The media racially profiled the victim in this white-on-black homicide, a rarity in black-on-white homicides. Fox59.com described him as a “homeless Black man” and “deceased African-American male”.

In Bloomington, the death of a homeless man is believed to be the result of a machete attack by a "self-proclaimed neighborhood enforcer" seeking revenge for recent tent thefts. According to a report from the Bloomington Police Department, 42-year-old Craig A. Pearson has been arrested and charged with felony murder in connection with the death of an unidentified homeless black man, 31-year-old Shaquille Phillips.
On December 7, BPD officers responded to a report of a possible dead body in a creek northeast of Wheeler Mission on S. Westplex Avenue. They discovered Shaquille Phillips, face down in a densely wooded area, with multiple severe cuts on his head and face. Part of his ear was nearly severed in a clean slice.
Several tents were set up in the immediate area, prompting officers to interview members of the Bloomington homeless community. A witness, whose tent was close to the victim's body, reported overhearing Pearson bragging about "chopping" somebody with a machete the night before. Other individuals in the area confirmed that Pearson had boasted about cutting Phillips and described his aggressive behavior as a self-appointed security guard for the homeless camp.
Further investigation, including interviews with witnesses recently released from prison, provided additional insights into the circumstances surrounding Shaquille Phillips's death
