Eagle Pass Casino Shooting Claims Life of Local Mother of Five
EAGLE PASS, Texas (DailyKenn.com) — A night of gaming and raffle drawings at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino turned deadly early Sunday when gunfire erupted, killing two people and injuring five others in the border community of Eagle Pass.

The victims were identified as Marcus Antley, a retired U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent and longtime resident, and Alicia Danielle Sanchez, 30, a devoted mother of five from nearby Carrizo Springs in Dimmit County. Sanchez succumbed to her injuries while being rushed to a hospital, according to family members and officials.
The shooting occurred around 11:48 p.m. Saturday near the casino's gaming floor during a weekend raffle event. Witnesses described chaos as patrons fled amid the sound of gunfire, with bullet holes later found in windows and slot machines. The Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas Police Department, which operates the facility on tribal land south of Eagle Pass, confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Authorities arrested Keryan Rashad Jones, 28, of San Antonio, about 12 hours later in Wilson County following a pursuit that ended with troopers disabling his vehicle using a PIT maneuver and a Taser. Jones, a former National Guard member, faces capital murder charges and is being held in solitary confinement at the Maverick County Detention Center on a $4.5 million bond. If convicted, he could face life in prison without parole or the death penalty, prosecutors said.
The investigation involves multiple agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers, FBI's Del Rio office, Maverick County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Border Patrol. A weapon was recovered from Jones' vehicle, and license plate recognition technology aided in his capture.
Eagle Pass Mayor Aaron Valdez mourned Antley as a "beloved community member" known for his generosity, leadership and lasting friendships. Dimmit County Judge Martha Alicia Gomez Ponce urged residents to unite in support of the victims' families, calling the incident a "tragic and senseless" loss.
Sanchez's mother, speaking publicly for the first time since the shooting, described the shock of learning her daughter's fate. "We're supposed to go before our children. A mother should never have to bury a child," she said, noting this would be her second such loss. Sanchez, whose life centered on her five children, left behind a legacy of love, with family launching a GoFundMe to support them. Neighbors in Carrizo Springs, though not all personally acquainted, expressed collective grief over the young mother's death.
Of the five injured, one — a 22-year-old woman — was treated and released, while a 59-year-old woman remained in serious but fair condition at University Health in San Antonio as of Monday. The other three were airlifted for treatment, with conditions undisclosed.
The casino, Texas' largest and a major economic driver for the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe, remained closed Monday as the investigation continued. Tribal police expressed heartbreak over the violence at a venue meant for entertainment and community gathering.
Gov. Greg Abbott directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to form task forces with federal and local law enforcement to enhance security at places of worship and public venues, citing a rise in such attacks. "The escalation of violent attacks ... is heinous and must end," Abbott said.
The Eagle Pass community, already strained by its role as a border hotspot, grappled with the aftermath through vigils and social media tributes. "We will fight for justice for you," one family friend posted online about Sanchez.
