Logan Haley Federico, 22, Killed in South Carolina Home Invasion; Father Blasts Criminal Justice System in Emotional Testimony

COLUMBIA, S.C. (
DailyKenn.com) — Logan Haley Federico, a 22-year-old college student from Waxhaw, North Carolina, was fatally shot during a violent home invasion in the early morning hours of May 3, 2025, while visiting friends near the University of South Carolina, authorities said.

Federico, who had recently discovered her passion for teaching and aspired to work with children, was asleep in a rental home on Cypress Street when 30-year-old Alexander Devante Dickey allegedly broke in through an unlocked door, police said. The petite 5-foot-3, 115-pound woman was dragged from her bed, forced to her knees and shot in the chest with a stolen 12-gauge shotgun, according to details shared by her family and investigators. She was discovered deceased around 3 a.m. by her boyfriend, with no other signs of trauma.

Dickey, a career criminal with 39 arrests including 25 felonies dating back to age 15, had begun his spree that night by stealing a car and burglarizing a neighboring home for keys, a wallet and the firearm used in the killing, officials said. Despite his extensive record — averaging 2.65 crimes per year — he had served just over 600 days in prison over the past decade and was free on the streets that night. Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook described Federico as a "helpless victim" and "not an intended target," calling her death a tragedy that "touches all of us in a way that it'll never leave us."

Federico's father, Stephen Federico, delivered a tearful tribute at a May 5 press conference, introducing himself as "Dad, or her hero" before breaking down. "Unfortunately, that day, I could not be her hero," he said, describing his daughter as a "strong, fun, loving individual" who cherished her family, friends, the Jersey Shore and the Philadelphia Eagles. "You can't kill my spirit. You might be able to kill my body, but you cannot kill my love that my family and friends shared with me," he said, relaying a message from Logan to her accused killer.

The Richland County Coroner's Office ruled the death a homicide, and Dickey was arrested days later after a manhunt, during which he went on a shopping spree with stolen credit cards. He faces a first-degree murder charge and is being held without bond, with his next court appearance pending in Richland County.

Federico's death has ignited a national debate on repeat offenders and lenient sentencing. On Sept. 29, 2025, Stephen Federico testified before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight at a field hearing on violent crime in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he lambasted lawmakers from both parties for a "broken" system that failed to incarcerate Dickey despite enough offenses to warrant over 140 years behind bars.

"Bang ... dead ... gone," Federico said, slamming his fist on the table as he recounted the invasion. "He was committing 2.65 crimes a year since he was 15 years old. But nobody could figure out that he couldn’t be rehabilitated." He urged reforms, vowing, "I'm not going to be quiet until somebody helps. Logan deserves to be heard."

The hearing drew controversy when Rep. Deborah Ross, D-N.C., mistakenly identified a photo of Federico as another recent murder victim, prompting an immediate apology. "I am so sorry," Ross said, as Federico corrected her. The incident underscored the growing number of victims from what critics call "soft-on-crime" policies.

A GoFundMe for the family has raised over $50,000 to cover expenses and establish scholarships in Logan's name, honoring her love for education. A celebration of life was held May 22, 2025, at Cedar Creek Ranch in Waxhaw, where attendees wore pink — her favorite color — to remember her "radiant personality, bold heart and unwavering love." She is survived by her parents, Stephen and Melissa Federico, and younger brother Jacob.
