Michael Clayton, 71, and his wife Gail Clayton, 66, of Charleston, Illinois, lost their lives in a tragic car accident on Friday, October 24, 2025, in Westfield, Illinois.

The couple was traveling in a Ford F150 truck when a Chevrolet Express van, driven by Edwin O. Pacheco-Meza, 34, of Indianapolis, crossed the center line and collided head-on with their vehicle. Both Michael and Gail Clayton were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The crash also resulted in life-threatening injuries to two other occupants of the truck, a 72-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman, who were transported to a hospital. Pacheco-Meza and an 18-year-old passenger in his van were not injured.
Pacheco-Meza has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence and reckless homicide. Illinois State Police are investigating the incident, and preliminary reports suggest that Pacheco-Meza was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. Michael Clayton was a member of the Coles County Board, serving as the district two representative and was in his second term. The accident has sent shockwaves through the community, with local officials and residents expressing their condolences and support for the Clayton family.
