Waco Man Killed in Apartment Shooting; Suspect Charged With Manslaughter
WACO, Texas — A 24-year-old Waco man died early Wednesday after being shot in the chest during an incident at an apartment, marking the city's ninth homicide investigation of the year.

Tyrese Johnson was fatally wounded around 2 a.m. in the 1500 block of South 21st Street, according to police. Officers responding to reports of a shooting found Johnson suffering from a single gunshot wound and performed CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
Joshua Aaron Chappell, 24, of Waco was arrested at the apartment without incident and charged with manslaughter. He remained in the McLennan County Jail on Thursday with bond set at $50,000.
An arrest affidavit detailed that Chappell had been in the living room with Johnson and a female witness when he began waving an AR-15-style rifle around and making "gun noises" while pointing it at the others. Witnesses told investigators that Chappell then pointed the rifle at Johnson, who was seated on a couch across from him, and it discharged, striking Johnson in the chest. Authorities described the act as reckless and believe the shooting was isolated, posing no ongoing threat to the public.
Johnson's next of kin have been notified, and the Waco Police Department's investigation continues.
