13-year-old Sullivan “Sully” Clarke was attacked while walking with his parents in Daytona Beach, Florida Feb. 14, 2026. Eight months later, the man responsible has received a lengthy prison sentence.

Jermaine Lynn Long, 44, a black male, was sentenced to 45 years in prison after pleading no contest to attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery and six additional charges connected to three other cases. The sentence was announced Oct. 15, 2026, according to local news reports.

About the attack

The Clarke family was visiting Florida during Daytona 500 weekend. After spending time at the Daytona International Speedway, they were walking back toward their hotel at about 10 p.m. when the attack occurred.

Sullivan was using his phone and walking a short distance behind his parents when Long approached him and slashed his neck with a box cutter, according to investigators. The attack happened without warning, leaving the teenager with a serious wound.

Sullivan was taken to a hospital where doctors used 13 stitches to close the injury. His recovery could have been far more difficult: Doctors told his family that a slightly deeper cut could have proved fatal. Fortunately, he survived.

The teenager later explained that he had turned his head to look up at a nearby amusement ride just as the attack happened. That movement helped keep the blade from striking the front of his throat.

A prison sentence involves many cases

Authorities arrested Long shortly after the attack. Investigators reported finding a box cutter and a knife in his possession.

The case also drew attention to an earlier incident on the same day. Police had encountered Long following a reported assault involving a sledgehammer, but officers initially determined there was insufficient evidence to arrest him at that time. Prosecutors subsequently filed a charge related to that incident.

Long's October sentencing covered multiple criminal cases, not just the attack on Sullivan. His no-contest pleas allowed the cases to be resolved without a trial.

Takeaway

Violent black crime continues to be a national health crisis and should be addressed as such by the federal government.
