DETROIT, Michigan — A routine mail delivery turned into a violent confrontation on Detroit’s east side when a U.S. Postal Service carrier was beaten and shot at by a group of black males, according to federal court documents.
Four males — Michael Grayse, Kyron Grayse, Daquan Hare and Randy Parker-Smith — now face federal charges in connection with the Oct. 7, 2026, attack. Investigators allege that the group assaulted the carrier while he was performing his official duties, leaving him with a serious head injury.
The victim was not identified.
Violent attempted robbery
According to an affidavit supporting the federal criminal complaint, the carrier was making deliveries at about 5 p.m. when several people approached him and allegedly tried to rob him at gunpoint.
When he refused to hand over his belongings, the group allegedly punched and kicked him, continuing the assault after he fell to the ground.
During the beating, one of the attackers allegedly fired a handgun. The bullet grazed the top of the carrier’s head, leaving a large cut and causing heavy bleeding. The injured worker was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators traced evidence to suspects
Police responding to the incident recovered evidence that helped direct their investigation, including a handgun found near the scene. Officers also found car keys that investigators linked to a Chevrolet Malibu registered to Kyron Grayse.
Authorities later detained the four men. According to court records, Hare acknowledged being present and allegedly admitted kicking the carrier several times. Investigators also cited statements attributed to Michael Grayse describing the confrontation and the involvement of other individuals.
The federal complaint alleges that the men participated in the assault. The specific allegations involving a firearm differ among the defendants, according to the charging documents.
Federal charges carry serious consequences
Each of the four men faces a federal charge of assaulting a federal employee. They also face allegations related to discharging a firearm during and in connection with a crime of violence, according to the court records.
Federal prosecution reflects the carrier’s status as a government employee who was working when the attack occurred. Assaults against federal workers performing their official duties can trigger federal criminal charges, with potential penalties depending on the circumstances and the offenses proved in court.
According to federal records, detention hearings were scheduled for Oct. 16. The proceedings will determine whether the defendants remain in custody as the case moves forward.
