Man charged with murdering girlfriend in North Charlotte shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 25-year-old black male from West Virginia faces a murder charge in the death of 26-year-old Courtney Marie Mullis following a shooting early on Oct. 7 in north Charlotte. Mullis was white.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say the shooting took place shortly after 5 a.m. while Mullis and Jamere Robert Edwards traveled through the area together. Medics initially transported Mullis to a hospital with serious injuries. Officers later confirmed she had died, turning the case into a homicide investigation.

North Division officers, working with a K9 unit, took Edwards into custody near the scene shortly after the incident. They brought him to the Law Enforcement Center for an interview with homicide detectives. Edwards, who is from Bluefield, West Virginia, was charged with murder and with resist, delay and obstruct after investigators determined he provided a false name.

He remains in the Mecklenburg County Detention Center without bond. Court records show he is scheduled to undergo a mental health evaluation. Police have not released a motive, and the investigation remains open.

Officials said the pair were commuting through north Charlotte at the time. Separate court records from a 2026 case list both names associated with the same local address, indicating they knew each other. Reports identify Edwards as Mullis’ boyfriend.
