LANSING, Ill. — Authorities have charged a local man with murder following the fatal shooting of a 66-year-old woman in a crowded store parking lot over the weekend, marking a rare outburst of violence in this south suburban community.

The incident began shortly before 2 p.m. on March 8, when Lansing police officers rushed to the Walmart at 17625 Torrence Ave. after receiving reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered Victoria L. Olson of nearby Thornton suffering from several bullet wounds near her vehicle. Emergency responders provided immediate aid before rushing her to a nearby hospital, where medical staff declared her dead soon after. The Lake County coroner's office later confirmed the cause as homicide stemming from the multiple injuries.

Investigators from the Lansing Police Department's criminal division, assisted by the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force and Illinois State Police forensics team, quickly secured the area and began piecing together evidence. Statements from bystanders who heard the shots or saw the aftermath helped pinpoint the alleged perpetrator, officials noted. No clear connection between the victim and the accused has been established, and authorities have dismissed any domestic dispute as a factor, leaving the reason behind the attack unclear as the probe continues.

Adebowale A. Oyelekan, 40, a Lansing resident, was taken into custody and formally accused of first-degree murder two days later on March 10. He remains detained pending an initial court hearing in Markham, where prosecutors will outline the case built on physical evidence and eyewitness input.

Olson, born in 1958, was remembered by loved ones as a devoted mother to her son, Chris, and a cherished friend in her tight-knit circle. She had recently marked her birthday just a day before the tragedy. Her family, still reeling from the sudden loss, opted for private memorial arrangements, according to funeral home records.

The shooting sent ripples through the area, with shoppers and neighbors voicing dismay at the brazen act in a familiar retail hub. Local leaders urged calm, emphasizing that the event appears isolated with no ongoing threat to the public. Police encouraged anyone with additional details to come forward, providing a hotline for tips. As the community grapples with the senseless loss, focus turns to the upcoming legal proceedings for closure.
