KATY, Texas (DailyKenn.com) — Authorities say a family dispute over child custody led to the fatal shootings of a husband and wife in their suburban Houston home last month.

Harris County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call shortly after 5 a.m. on Jan. 12 at a residence on Bent Springs Lane in the Bridgewater Village neighborhood. One of the couple's adult sons reported finding his parents shot and unresponsive downstairs, according to sheriff's officials. Emergency responders arrived minutes later and pronounced Christopher Lopez, 52, and his wife, Trinette Rayson-Lopez, 52, dead at the scene despite attempts to revive them.

Investigators determined Lopez had been shot once in the face near the main living area, while Rayson-Lopez suffered gunshot wounds to her head and left hand near the kitchen, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences ruled. Both deaths were classified as homicides.

The couple's two adult children, in their 20s, and a 7-year-old girl they were fostering were asleep upstairs when the gunfire erupted. Family members said the group heard loud noises, including what sounded like a single heavy shot, though evidence showed multiple rounds were fired. None of the three was injured, and Child Protective Services placed the young girl in a secure location afterward, officials confirmed.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez initially described the case as a possible murder-suicide but quickly shifted focus to a targeted double homicide after examining the evidence. Detectives interviewed relatives, neighbors, and others, while crime scene teams collected items from the home and reviewed nearby security footage.

On Jan. 27, authorities arrested Norman Lee Johnson, 42, in Round Rock, about 180 miles north of the crime scene. Members of the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force took him into custody without incident, and he was booked into the Williamson County Jail before transfer to Harris County. Johnson, identified as the biological father of the 7-year-old and a cousin of Rayson-Lopez, faces capital murder charges.

Prosecutors allege the killings stemmed from ongoing tensions over the child's custody. Court records show Johnson had been charged with harassment in October 2024 after allegedly threatening to kill Lopez during a family disagreement about the girl, whom the Lopezes had taken in and were in the process of adopting.

Family members described the victims as devoted high school sweethearts who built a nurturing home since purchasing the property in 2000. Relatives told investigators they suspected Johnson early on and cooperated fully, though they avoided public speculation until his arrest. The adult children expressed relief at the development but said they felt unsafe returning to the house amid the trauma.

In the close-knit Katy community, residents voiced shock over the violence in a typically quiet area. Neighbors offered prayers and support to the grieving family, with some organizing meal deliveries and vigils. Local leaders urged anyone with additional information to contact the sheriff's office or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Johnson remains in custody awaiting formal arraignment, with prosecutors indicating they may seek the death penalty given the circumstances.
