ANDERSON, S.C. — Authorities have charged a man with murder in the shooting death of a woman who was struck by a stray bullet during a dispute at a house party nearly 25 years ago, bringing a long-dormant investigation to a potential close.

Sheriff Chad McBride revealed the breakthrough on Monday, stating that detectives had reopened the probe into Jennifer Lawson's killing last summer and pursued fresh leads that led to the suspect's apprehension.

The events began on the evening of June 26, 2001, when a modest gathering at a residence on Camelot Forest Drive in Belton drew more attendees than expected, swelling to dozens of people, some from outside the local area, according to sheriff's office accounts.

Around that time, three unidentified men pulled up in a dark-colored sedan and soon became embroiled in a heated verbal exchange with another guest outside the home, investigators said.

Hosts intervened and directed the men to depart, but as they backed out of the driveway, at least one occupant discharged a firearm from inside the vehicle, officials reported.

The round pierced the wall of a nearby trailer, grazed a man's shoulder, and then struck 29-year-old Lawson in the head while she stood inside, authorities determined. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.

Lawson, a mother with no connection to the quarrel, was simply in an unfortunate spot during the chaos, the sheriff emphasized in his announcement.

Deputies initially canvassed the area and questioned those present, but the inquiry stalled without sufficient evidence or identifications, leading it to be classified as a cold case for over two decades, per office records.

Last year, a dedicated cold case team revisited the file, conducting new interviews with original attendees, tracking down additional individuals across state borders, and re-examining physical items, McBride explained.

Their efforts culminated in the arrest of 55-year-old Andretti Mondez Goss, whom authorities booked into the Anderson County Detention Center without bond.

Prosecutors leveled charges against him including murder, assault and battery with intent to kill, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and discharging a firearm into a dwelling.

The sheriff cautioned that the case remains ongoing, with the possibility of further detentions as more information surfaces.

Residents in the tight-knit community voiced a sense of relief following the news, with some taking to social media to commend law enforcement's persistence and note that accountability can arrive even after many years.

One local commenter described the development as heartening, underscoring that delayed justice still holds value for victims' loved ones.

Investigators continue to solicit tips from the public, urging anyone with knowledge of the night to contact them anonymously.
