DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Dr. Jena Salem never planned to test her limits in the middle of the night. Yet when an intruder forced his way into her rental home in late January 2026, the anesthesiology resident drew on every ounce of resolve she had built through years of medical training.

Salem, who had been completing her residency at hospitals across the Atlanta metro area, woke to the terrifying reality of someone in her house. The attacker had cut the power before entering. What followed was a desperate struggle that left her with life-threatening injuries, including a slashed throat and a stab wound to the chest that collapsed one lung.

Despite the overwhelming odds, Salem refused to give up. She fought fiercely in the basement after he dragged her there, enduring punches and a sexual assault. At one point, the kitchen knife used against her broke during their confrontation. Using her legs, she pushed him away with enough force to break free, escape the home, and reach safety. Emergency responders rushed her to Grady Memorial Hospital — one of the very facilities where she had been working.

Authorities arrested Derrick Burnstine nearby shortly after the January 21 incident. He faces serious charges, including first-degree home invasion, aggravated assault, aggravated sodomy, kidnapping with bodily injury, and attempted murder. Court records indicate Burnstine entered the encounter with a lengthy history of prior charges.

Salem's recovery has been remarkable. In interviews months later, she shared how the experience reinforced her belief in pushing forward even when survival seems impossible. She carries a visible scar on her neck as a permanent reminder but has focused on completing her training and moving forward with a new position in another state.

Her story highlights the vulnerability that even dedicated professionals can face in their own homes. As a physician dedicated to helping others through critical moments, Salem turned inward during her own crisis, relying on quick thinking and determination that mirrors the skills she uses daily in the operating room.

This case serves as a stark example of random violence interrupting ordinary lives. Salem's willingness to speak publicly aims to encourage others facing impossible situations to keep fighting.
