Two people who knew a Morganton couple now face first-degree murder charges after investigators linked the killings to a recent inheritance.

Carla Janon Murray, 39, and her black husband Raheim McClain Murray, 31, died in mid-July 2026 inside their home in Burke County, North Carolina. Court documents say the pair was shot while they slept. Their bodies later turned up days apart near a nature trail in Glen Alpine.

Jamar Quarmaine Propst and Tosha Lee Lewis, both 36, each face two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of felony conspiracy. Authorities arrested them on July 25 without incident. Both remain held without bond.

According to a search warrant, Lewis had worked with Carla Murray at a smoke shop and learned the couple expected a $75,000 inheritance. Propst told investigators the killings were about money. Lewis visited the Murrays’ home under the claim that she and Propst were arguing. After the couple fell asleep, she left a door open. Propst entered and shot them, the warrant states. The pair then cleaned the residence, moved the bodies, and buried them over the following days.

Investigators recovered Raheim Murray’s remains on July 21 and Carla Murray’s on July 25 near the same trail. A park worker’s report of suspicious circumstances days earlier had started the case. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assisted Burke County deputies.

After the deaths, the warrant says, the suspects used the victims’ faces to unlock their phones and transferred about $19,000 from Carla Murray’s Cash App account. Propst and Lewis are also accused of moving into the Murrays’ home with several children.

The case remains in the early stages of the court process. Propst and Lewis have appeared before a judge. No trial date has been set.

The deaths of Carla and Raheim Murray highlight how quickly trust among acquaintances can turn deadly when money enters the picture. Authorities continue to gather evidence as the charges move forward in Burke County Superior Court.
