Ronald H. Williams Sr., 53, told dispatchers he had killed his family and intended to take his own life. Nearly two hours later they entered and found Williams, his wife Kelly L. George, 44, and their four young children dead from gunshot wounds.

The children were Carol Williams, 9; Ronald Williams Jr., 7; Sarah Williams, 5; and Kelly Magee-Williams, 3.

Initial reports described the deaths as a murder-suicide carried out by Williams. Days later the Kansas Bureau of Investigation revised that picture. Evidence now points to a shared plan by both adults. Investigators say Williams and George together decided to kill the children and then themselves. No argument or physical fight appears to have triggered the events that morning.

The KBI noted a pattern of erratic behavior by the couple in the period leading up to Aug. 11. They made repeated nonsensical statements to law enforcement and others. Documentation recovered during the probe shows George bought a Taurus .38 Special revolver in February 2025. That same firearm was recovered at the scene. Authorities say nothing indicates anyone else took part in the deaths.

Williams had a prior criminal record that included a felony conviction placing him on the Kansas sex-offender registry. Local police had contact with the couple on multiple occasions before the shooting, often tied to complaints and unusual conduct. Those earlier encounters did not signal the scale of what occurred on Aug. 11.

The investigation continues. Once complete, the KBI will deliver a full report to the Cowley County attorney. No motive has been publicly detailed beyond the evidence of premeditation.

The loss of four children ages 3 to 9, along with both parents, leaves a permanent mark on the small Kansas community of Winfield. Officials have confirmed the identities and the sequence of the call, the response, and the findings inside the home.
