Cop dies after being intentionally rammed with truck, allegedly

A routine police assignment turned deadly for Baton Rouge Police Sgt. Caleb Eisworth, a 44-year-old veteran officer whose career spanned more than two decades.

On June 16, 2025, Eisworth was riding his police motorcycle in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, while traveling to a funeral procession when authorities say a pickup truck intentionally struck him. He suffered critical injuries and spent nearly eight weeks hospitalized before dying on Aug. 10.

Investigators arrested Gad Black, 42, in connection with the attack. Prosecutors initially filed charges including attempted first-degree murder, and the case was expected to be upgraded following Eisworth’s death.

According to WFAB, “The man accused of intentionally ramming into a police officer Monday morning allegedly later bragged about it in a social media post, WAFB Chief Investigator Chris Nakamoto reports. 'Just stretched one on Joor Rd.,' the post said.”

“During an interview with authorities, Black alluded to a deep-rooted hatred for law enforcement, according to the arrest report. It added that Black admitted to following Sgt. Eisworth just before the crash.

“Black was also arrested previously in 2014 on two counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle on a police officer and placed on probation after a plea deal, Nakamoto reports. He was taken into custody near the Academy Sports store on Siegen Lane in Baton Rouge.

“Deputies said that Black’s girlfriend, Asia Raby, 40, has also been arrested in the case and is charged with obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact to attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.”

After a series of courtroom outbursts and a diagnosed history of schizophrenia, a judge found Black mentally incompetent to stand trial.

According to WAFB, Black was initially found competent to stand trial in December 2025, but that ruling was overturned. On June 11, 2026, a judge declared the 42-year-old mentally unfit and incompetent to stand trial following a new sanity commission report. He was ordered to a state hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Eisworth joined the Baton Rouge Police Department in 2002 and became a member of its motorcycle division in 2008. During his career, he received numerous honors, including the department’s Medal of Valor for rescuing someone from a burning vehicle while off duty.

He is survived by his wife, Darla, and their daughter, Saydee, along with his parents and brother.
