PICKENS, S.C. — A Saturday evening in Pickens County, South Carolina, ended with the death of a local resident and the arrest of a woman on serious charges.

Douglas James Nelson, 63, of Pickens, died after being shot in the upper body. The incident occurred on Aug. 8, 2026. Emergency responders arrived and tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pickens County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded around 5:40 p.m. after a 911 call reported a man had been shot. Details from the call pointed to the caller’s involvement. Deputies found Nelson with at least one gunshot wound. No one else was hurt.

Investigators identified 33-year-old Soshinque Barney White as the suspected shooter. They located her and took her to the C. David Stone Law Enforcement Center for questioning. Officials later charged White with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. She is being held without bond in the Pickens County Detention Center.

Nelson was white, White is black. Their relationship, if any, was not disclosed.

The Pickens County Coroner’s Office confirmed Nelson’s identity and noted that an autopsy will be performed to determine additional details about the shooting.
