Fifteen-year-old Austin Payne managed to contact his mother after being shot on Halloween night, telling her he needed help. By the following morning, he was dead. The phone call that should have brought a mother and son together instead became part of a homicide investigation in Albany, Georgia.

The Albany Police Department has arrested four people in connection with the teenager's killing, including three minors.

Call for help

The incident began Saturday evening, Oct. 31, 2026. According to investigative details reported by local television station WALB, Payne was walking with a group when they encountered armed individuals.

Witnesses told investigators that the suspects approached the group, demanded their belongings and opened fire. Authorities recovered seven 9mm shell casings while examining the scene.

Phone records reportedly show that Payne called his mother at approximately 8:03 p.m. He told her he had been shot and needed assistance.

Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators reportedly showed six people approaching the apartment building around 7:35 p.m. A person wearing a hoodie and shorts was later captured leaving through a window.

Payne's mother began searching for him after he failed to return home. Using location information from his phone, she traced it to an abandoned apartment. She entered the property and discovered her son unresponsive.
