NASHVILLE, Tenn. — What began as a disagreement between two employees at a U-Haul facility ended with one man dead and another facing a homicide charge.

Fredrick K. Lytton, 56, died after a shooting on Aug. 4, 2026. The incident took place at a West Nashville U-Haul location during the early evening hours.

Metro Nashville Police Department officers responded to a call around 5 p.m. They found Lytton with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers provided aid at the scene before paramedics transported him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He died shortly after arrival.

Police said the shooting followed an argument between Lytton and a fellow employee over a drink. Investigators later determined that Devin A. Rice, 23, had purchased the drink for Lytton before the dispute. According to court documents and Rice’s own statements, Lytton walked away during the argument. Rice then pulled out a pistol and shot him in the back multiple times.

Rice put the gun in his pocket, picked up his backpack and left the business. He fled the area right after the shooting.

Titans Division detectives tracked him down the next day. On Aug. 5, authorities arrested Rice and charged him with criminal homicide. During an interview at police headquarters, he admitted to the argument and the shooting.

The investigation remains active as prosecutors prepare the case. Rice is in custody pending further court proceedings.

Lytton worked alongside Rice at the moving company. The sudden escalation from a verbal exchange to gunfire left little time for intervention. Police continue reviewing evidence while the legal process advances.
