Ocala, Florida — A routine shift turned fatal for a new store employee on a Tuesday evening on Aug. 11, 2026.
Ocala police officers responded around 5:30 p.m. to a report of a shooting inside King’s Food Mart at 149 SW Martin Luther King Avenue in Ocala, Florida. They found 45-year-old Ean Stein, a white Ocala resident and employee in training, suffering from gunshot wounds. Stein was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
Stein had only recently begun working at the store. According to the owner, it was his first week on the job, and he was expected to start a more permanent role soon. That evening, a group of young men, presumably black, entered and tried to buy tobacco products. Stein asked them to show identification. When they refused, a physical fight broke out inside the store.
Detectives determined that Stein had been involved in a brief altercation with one person moments before the shooting. Nineteen-year-old Curnel Brown was present but not part of the fight. Video footage and other evidence, however, identified Brown as the person who fired the shots. Officers located him nearby within minutes and took him into custody without incident. A firearm believed used in the shooting was recovered.
After reviewing the evidence, investigators concluded the use of deadly force was not justified. Brown was charged with second-degree murder and booked into the Marion County Jail. The Ocala Police Department has expressed thoughts for Stein’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. The case remains under investigation.
Stein’s death came during what should have been an ordinary workday for a man just trying to earn a living.
