CARENCRO, La. — Two 20-year-old men were fatally shot inside an apartment at a local complex in 2019, and a third 20-year-old man was arrested after a police pursuit that ended in a crash.
The victims were identified as Adam R. Williamson of Krotz Springs and Dustin A. Wiltz of Scott. Both died at the scene from gunshot wounds sustained in a unit at the French Colony Apartments on Amesbury Drive.
Officers arrived shortly after 8:30 p.m. on March 30 in response to reports of shots fired at the complex. They located the two men inside one of the apartments. A short time later, authorities spotted a vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed and gave chase.
The pursuit ended when the driver lost control and struck a tree on Acorn Drive. The man behind the wheel, Jeremy Edwards of Church Point, was taken into custody after receiving treatment for minor injuries at a nearby hospital.
According to investigators, Edwards had spent about two hours visiting friends in one apartment at the complex before moving to another unit where several people were gathered. He then opened fire inside that second apartment, striking Williamson and Wiltz. Police said he next confronted another person at the complex and took their vehicle at gunpoint before fleeing.
Edwards was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center without bond on two counts of first-degree murder. He also faces charges of armed robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, aggravated flight from an officer and driving under suspension. Authorities have said the motive for the shooting is not yet known and that the investigation remains active. Additional charges could be filed.
No further details about the sequence inside the apartment or the circumstances leading up to the gunfire have been released.
In January 2023, Edwards was found incompetent to stand trial and committed to a state psychiatric facility for treatment. On March 24, 2023, he pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in a deal approved by the victims’ families, avoiding the death penalty. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole or probation, reports say.
