AKRON, Ohio — A mother and her 12-year-old son died after gunfire struck their vehicle on Akron’s West Side Saturday night, causing the car to crash into trees and catch fire, authorities said.
Akron police responded to multiple 911 calls around 8:10 p.m. on March 28 near 30 West Wilbeth Road in the Firestone Park neighborhood. Officers discovered a vehicle that had left the road, collided with trees along Hemlock Street and was burning.
Jericho L. Mangual, 12, of Barberton, was inside with a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:34 p.m. His mother, Tania Mangual, 47, also of Barberton and the driver, sustained a gunshot wound as well. She was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center, where she died at 8:50 p.m.
A 2-year-old boy, another son of Tania Mangual, was in the backseat and was not injured by the gunfire. He was transported to a hospital for evaluation as a precaution.
A 49-year-old woman who had been with the family reported being shot at as the Manguals prepared to drive away after dropping her off. She escaped the immediate area and later gave detectives information that identified the suspect.
Brandon T. Casto, 28, surrendered to authorities at the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office the next day. He faces two counts of aggravated murder and two counts of felonious assault. He is being held at the Southeast Ohio Regional Jail in Nelsonville.
Detectives served a search warrant at an apartment connected to Casto and recovered firearms, accessories and ammunition. Investigators are looking into whether a parking-related disagreement preceded the shooting.
The Akron Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is continuing its investigation.
