LA PLATA, Md. — A 27-year-old Waldorf man was fatally shot in the front passenger seat of a vehicle during an argument in La Plata on March 22, authorities said.
La Plata police officers were flagged down by two backseat passengers shortly after 10:25 p.m. near the intersection of La Plata Road and Radio Station Road. The witnesses reported that the driver, Dayton James Webber, 27, of La Plata, shot Bradrick Michael Wells, 27, of Waldorf, amid a heated dispute inside the car. All four occupants knew one another.
Webber pulled over near Radio Station Road and Llano Drive and asked the passengers to help remove Wells from the vehicle. When they refused and left the scene to seek assistance, Webber drove away with Wells still inside, according to investigators.
Charles County sheriff’s deputies joined the search. Nearly two hours later, around 12:41 a.m. on March 23, a resident in the 10000 block of Newport Church Road in nearby Charlotte Hall called 911 after discovering a body in the yard. Officers responded and pronounced Wells dead at the scene.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Webber. His vehicle was later located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Webber was taken into custody at a local hospital while seeking medical treatment. He waived extradition and was returned to Maryland.
Webber faces charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and related offenses in Charles County District Court. The Charles County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
