DETROIT — Cordell Harris, 40, of Detroit, died after being stabbed multiple times in the neck during a confrontation at a liquor store on the city’s west side.

The incident occurred about 11:54 p.m. on March 10 at a store in the 14800 block of Livernois Avenue. Harris became involved in a verbal argument inside the establishment with 31-year-old Bernice Shaneka Chenevert, also of Detroit. During the dispute, Chenevert handed a broken glass bottle to 54-year-old Steven Lewis Hooks, of Detroit. Hooks then used the bottle to stab Harris repeatedly in the neck.

Emergency medical personnel rushed Harris to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

Detroit police investigated the slaying and forwarded the case to prosecutors. On March 13, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office charged Hooks and Chenevert with premeditated first-degree murder. Both defendants appeared in 36th District Court that day for arraignment. A judge denied bond in each case and ordered them held in custody. A probable cause conference is scheduled for March 23, with a preliminary examination set for March 30.

The charges allege that Chenevert and Hooks acted together in the fatal attack. If convicted as charged, each faces a possible sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Harris’s death marked the latest in a series of violent incidents in the city, though authorities have released no further details about any prior connection between the victim and the accused. The case remains active as the judicial process moves forward.
