DES MOINES, Iowa — At 40, Jessica Henderson had plans sketched out in journals and a heart set on creating a nonprofit for survivors of domestic violence. But, on May 8, 2026, Henderson died from injuries suffered in a shooting the previous afternoon. Authorities say her ex-boyfriend, 50-year-old Abdul Jabbar Jackson, carried out the attack shortly after his release from jail. Police had arrested him days earlier on harassment charges following reports of threats. Henderson had contacted officers less than two weeks before, describing threatening messages from Jackson after she ended their relationship.

Jackson posted bond and left custody about six hours before the incident. Investigators determined he shot Henderson and her dog during the confrontation. He also fired at one of her friends who was present. First responders rushed to the scene and worked to save both Henderson and Jackson. Paramedics transported Henderson to the hospital in critical condition, but she passed away the next morning on May 9. Jackson died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Henderson’s family later shared memories that paint a fuller picture of who she was. They described her as a vibrant soul who welcomed everyone without judgment, loved bright colors and thrift-store finds, and danced through life with energy. She advocated for survivors, homosexuals, and people in recovery.

This case highlights the dangers that can follow when someone tries to leave an abusive situation. Henderson had taken steps to protect herself by reporting the threats, yet the system released her former partner on bond. Her loved ones now focus on honoring her spirit rather than the violence that took her. They hope her story encourages greater attention to keeping survivors safe.

Henderson is survived by family and friends who continue to celebrate the way she made others feel seen and valued. Her obituary notes she left surrounded by those closest to her. In the words shared by those who knew her best, her legacy centers on love, acceptance, and the belief that everyone deserves kindness and a second chance.
