A routine evening errand ended in unimaginable loss for one University of Washington student last month. On May 10, 2026, 19-year-old Juniper Blessing was killed while doing laundry in off-campus student housing. Authorities later charged 31-year-old Christopher Michael Leahy with first-degree murder in the stabbing that took his life.
Having recently completed his first year as an atmospheric science major, Blessing came to Seattle from Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The incident occurred in a common area of the housing complex where many UW students live. First responders found Blessing unresponsive. The King County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed he had suffered more than 40 stab wounds. Prosecutors say Leahy, who is not a UW student, acted with premeditated intent. Court records indicate he entered the building and carried out the attack. He turned himself in to Bellevue police days later.
King County prosecutors filed charges against Leahy on May 18, adding a deadly weapon enhancement that could increase his sentence. He remains in custody on $10 million bail as the case moves forward. Investigators have reviewed surveillance footage and other evidence linking him to the scene.
