Flat Rock, North Carolina, lost one of its own on April 27 when gunfire cut short the life of 18-year-old Izabella Maria Gamez. Known to friends and family as Bella, she had just graduated from North Henderson High School the previous December and looked forward to walking in the spring ceremony. Those who knew her describe a young woman who cared deeply, always rooting for others to succeed and live their best lives. Her cousin recalled how Bella wanted everyone around her to thrive, just as she hoped to do herself. Her father, Rudy, often spoke with pride about his daughter, and the outpouring of memories from loved ones paints a picture of someone who brought genuine warmth to her circle.

Henderson County Public Schools felt the impact immediately. Officials issued a statement expressing the grief shared by students, teachers, and staff, while promising support for anyone affected. The school community remembered Bella as a December 2025 graduate preparing for graduation, and they worked to honor her memory amid the shock.

That Monday night, a group of young women had arranged to settle a disagreement through a physical fight at Dana Community Park. What started as a planned confrontation escalated sharply. Around 11:26 p.m., shots rang out. Deputies from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office reached the scene within minutes after receiving reports of gunfire. They located Gamez suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency responders rushed her for treatment, but she died from her injuries.

Detectives quickly built a case through witness interviews and evidence at the park. Their efforts identified two teenagers as suspects. Nineteen-year-old Leron Monteith of Hendersonville now faces first-degree murder charges; prosecutors say he fired the fatal shot while standing outside a vehicle during the clash. Eighteen-year-old Sheilah Tong faces charges as an accessory after the fact. Authorities allege she drove Monteith from the park to his mother’s home immediately afterward.

Court appearances followed the next day. A judge denied bond for Monteith but released Tong on a $250,000 secured bond with conditions: a nightly curfew and no contact with anyone else involved in the case. Both are scheduled to appear in court again on May 12.

This incident has left Henderson County residents searching for answers about how a dispute among teens could turn deadly in a public space meant for relaxation. As memorials appear and stories of Bella’s kindness spread, the community turns its attention to healing while calling for better ways to steer young people away from violence. Her loved ones hope others will carry forward her positive spirit and make choices that would make her proud.
