ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Early on July 16, 2026, a confrontation over a parked vehicle left one young man dead and another wounded in the Lindenwood Park section of St. Louis.

Timothy Kemper, 39, saw a group of males, possibly black, checking vehicle door handles and then entering his car to search through it, according to court documents and police. He retrieved a firearm and fired several rounds at the group. Two 19-year-olds were struck. One later died from his injuries at a hospital. The second man was hit in the mid-back, left flank, left arm and right chest and was listed in critical but stable condition.

Someone drove the injured pair to a hospital just before 4:30 a.m. and then left the scene. St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded and later found a vehicle that had been broken into. Kemper came out of a nearby residence, told officers he was involved, and surrendered.

Homicide detectives interviewed him in custody. The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office then issued charges of first-degree murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and three counts of armed criminal action. The case is filed in the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court of St. Louis.

Kemper’s attorney has indicated the shooting was an act of self-defense. Missouri law allows deadly force only under limited conditions, generally when a person reasonably believes they face an imminent threat of serious harm. Defense of property alone is not enough, legal observers have noted. Whether any of the men posed a direct physical threat remains part of the ongoing investigation.

Police have confirmed Kemper lived on the second floor of a nearby building and observed the activity from there before firing. He stayed at the location and cooperated with responding officers. The probe continues as prosecutors prepare the case.

The two victims were both 19. Authorities have identified them in court papers as Trevor Robinson, who died, and Dominic Holmes, who survived his wounds.
