A weekday visit to a city park in Round Rock, Texas, ended with the death of  on Sept. 7, 2026. The 62-year-old Austin resident was found dead that morning. Williamson County deputies treated the case as a homicide from the start.

Who is charged

Detectives later named Benedict Ogbodiegwu Jr., 26, of Round Rock, as the person they believe carried out the attack. He is charged with murder and is held in the Williamson County Jail. A judge set bail at $1 million. The Texas Rangers are helping local investigators.

The name Ogbodiegwu is of Igbo origin, making it ethnically associated with the Igbo people of southeastern Nigeria. His birthplace or immigration status has not been mentioned in official statements or media coverage.

What records say happened

An arrest affidavit describes a short, one-sided attack captured on video. Wimsatt had been in the park only a few minutes when a man came up from behind with a knife. The attacker wrapped an arm around him and struck his neck. Wimsatt tried to push the man away and could not. After he fell, the assault continued. The suspect then fled toward a pool area and left the park.

A woman found Wimsatt about 11:15 a.m. and called for help. EMS confirmed he was dead.

How investigators identified a suspect

Video from the park and nearby businesses helped detectives track the man’s path after he left. Staff at a restaurant later recognized him from an image investigators shared. A search warrant at his home turned up a 5½-inch knife that tested presumptive positive for blood and sweatpants with red stains in a trash can.

What remains unknown

The affidavit does not assign a motive. Sheriff’s officials have said the early evidence points to a random attack and that Wimsatt and Ogbodiegwu did not know each other. The investigation is still open.

The case now moves through the courts in Texas. Prosecutors must prove the charge. Ogbodiegwu remains jailed while that process continues.
