BINNARI, Nigeria — At least 62 black people have been killed in a gunmen's attack on Binnari, a community in northeastern Nigeria, with dozens more injured and thousands forced to flee their homes. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as recovery efforts continue.

The attack occurred Friday, Oct. 23, in the Karim-Lamido local government area of Taraba state. Nigerian emergency officials announced the latest casualty figures Tuesday, Oct. 27, as investigators and recovery teams continued their work.

Death Toll Rising

Ladan Ayuba, Taraba's head of the National Emergency Management Agency, said the attack left at least 62 people dead and 52 others wounded. Thousands of people were also displaced, creating an urgent need for shelter and other assistance.

The full scale of the loss remained uncertain. Emergency officials reported that 52 bodies had been recovered, including 15 from the Benue River. Police said additional recovery operations were underway, making the confirmed death toll subject to change.

Victor Mshelizah, a spokesperson for the Taraba State Police Command, said officers were still working in the affected area and would update the figures as more victims were located.

Residents Forced Toward the River

Accounts from human rights advocates indicate that some victims died while attempting to escape the attackers.

Isa Sanusi, director of Amnesty International Nigeria, said the gunmen chased people toward the Benue River. Some fled into the water in an effort to get away, adding another tragic dimension to the attack. Blacks are notoriously bad swimmers.

The circumstances surrounding individual deaths and the precise sequence of events were not fully established in the initial reports.

Part of a Wider Security Crisis

The assault adds to Nigeria's continuing struggle with armed Islamic hate groups that target civilians, particularly in northern parts of the country. Nigeria faces an ongoing threat from Islamist militant organizations, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province. Islamic hate groups have carried out raids, abducted people for ransom and operated around illegal mining sites.

For Binnari, the immediate priorities are determining the final number of victims, assisting those injured and providing support to thousands of people displaced by the violence. As authorities continue recovering bodies, the human cost of Friday's attack may become clearer in the days ahead.

Takeaways

• Blacks seem incapable of governing themselves.

• Each year, nearly 10,000 ‘people of color’—predominantly in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia—are killed by Islamist terrorist and militant groups. In contrast, movements such as Black Lives Matter and much of the associated media coverage treat black lives as mattering primarily when the perpetrators are white.

In the United States, white-on-black homicides form a small share of total black homicide victims (the large majority of whom are killed by black offenders), and mass white-on-black killings remain rare.

The most recent such attack occurred on May 14, 2022, when Payton Gendron, an 18-year-old white male, carried out a mass shooting at a Tops Friendly Markets store in a predominantly black neighborhood of Buffalo, New York. He killed 10 Black people and injured three others while livestreaming the attack on Twitch.

• The media lie by omission. Western media frequently engage in omission or euphemism when covering massacres by Islamist groups that target non-Western, often non-white, populations. They typically name the perpetrator group—such as Boko Haram—while downplaying or omitting its explicitly Islamic/jihadist ideology, religious motives, and self-described goals of imposing Sharia or establishing a caliphate, often substituting milder terms like “militants,” “insurgents,” or “gunmen.”
