PHOENIX, Arizona, Oct. 3, 2026 — A late-night encounter in Phoenix ended in tragedy when 58-year-old John David Lee was fatally shot inside a vehicle that subsequently crashed into a garage. Police arrested a 41-year-old black male in connection with Lee’s death, and investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal confrontation.

The shooting occurred shortly after midnight on Oct. 3, according to reports from Phoenix police.

Victim Found Inside Crashed Vehicle

Dispute Preceded the Shooting, Court Documents Say

Police identified the suspect as Sherman Murphy, 41, who was taken into custody shortly after the shooting.

According to court documents cited by Arizona's Family, Lee had gone to the apartment to pick up a person known to both men. Lee and Murphy reportedly became involved in an argument before the shooting.

The documents allege that Lee threatened Murphy with a knife. Murphy then allegedly drew a firearm and fired several times through the vehicle's passenger-side window, striking Lee.

Witness accounts provided investigators with additional information about the confrontation and what happened afterward. Murphy reportedly told investigators that he had been outside the apartment when he heard the gunfire. Authorities nevertheless arrested him after their initial investigation.

Murder Charge Filed

Murphy was booked into jail on a charge of second-degree murder. According to Arizona's Family, his bond was set at $1 million.
