KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City police are investigating the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Rhegan Spiegel, a former University of Missouri-Kansas City volleyball player who was found with a gunshot wound late Sunday night.
Officers responded to a report of gunfire shortly before midnight on Oct. 18 and found Spiegel at the scene. They performed lifesaving measures before she was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Khyree L. Simmons, 36, faces second-degree murder and weapons charges in the shooting death.
Simmons turned himself in with his mother after police identified his 2008 Nissan Altima. Court records say he admitted shooting Spiegel in the chest, claiming she startled him by sitting in his car while he was there for a drug deal. He is held without bond.
Investigators had recovered a gray 2008 Nissan Altima they believe is connected to the shooting.
Police have not released a motive.
