The Christian professor's views were tested when the small state university where he worked in Ohio insisted he refer to students by their preferred pronouns. 

Meriwether reportedly sued Shawnee State University because he feared a pay cut or even dismissal were imminent. 

• Gender confusion is a component of identity confusion. It may be used as a thought reform technique to break down an individual's sense of identity to make room for a new sense of identity. Some believe that individuals who retrain a strong sense of identity, such as gender, race, religion, nationality, etc. are less susceptible to mind control.

The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday ruled in favor of a “devout Christian” professor who was disciplined because he “refused to refer to students by their ‘preferred pronouns'” after a 2016 directive at a small state university in Ohio ordered him to do so.  The court held that university officials and a lower federal district court failed to recognize the professor’s First Amendment rights to free speech and to the free exercise of his religion. By so holding, the court decried the notion that a university might “wield alarming power to compel ideological conformity.”
