The incident was called a hate crime because the victim was East Asian. Violence against East Asians, particularly the elderly, has sparked protests. Oddly, the perpetrators of the crimes are nearly always Black, an important detail that is usually omitted. What's more, race is seldom mentioned when victims are White and the suspects are Black.
